Causes of Clogs in Your Bathroom Sink

Posted by Butter Plumbing

We see a lot of bathroom sink clogs here in Summerlin, NV, and while you can use a chemical cleanser or store-bought solution to handle it, we usually recommend a professional plumbing service to deal with it. Clogs can be particularly tricky in the bathroom, and store-bought cleaners and even snakes will struggle to do the job the way you need them to. This stems in part due to the causes of clogs in bathroom sinks, which are often tougher to deal with than clogs in the kitchen sink. Kitchen clogs are almost always caused by foodstuffs, while bathroom clogs can comprise a wide array of materials, not all of which will respond to store-bought solutions. Here’s a quick look at some of the causes.

  • Hair. Human hair is surprisingly strong, and when combined with other components can make a clog thick and impenetrable. When it gets caught in the piping, both it and anything attached to it become very difficult to dislodge. This can include short hair from shaving as well as longer hair from combing and brushing.
  • Toothpaste. When it slips down the drain, toothpaste can harden to the consistently of cement, and in large amounts can build up in bad positions in your pipe.
  • Cleaning Products. This can involve soap, hair gel, skin cleansers or any other bathing or beauty product. They are water soluble and may eventually wash away but the presence of hair and other materials will make that process very slow, and in the meantime they will defy easy efforts to clear away.
  • Dental Floss. Dental floss can be almost as bad as human hair. Always throw your used floss in the trash rather than washing it down the drain.
