How Does a Tankless Water Heater Work?

Monday, April 6th, 2015 by Butter Plumbing

The phrase “tankless water heater” may sound like something of an oxymoron (think “jumbo shrimp”), but we can assure you that tankless water heaters can be a great option for your Las Vegas, NV, home. The question many homeowners have is: how do tankless systems work? There’s a reason tankless water heaters are also called heat on-demand, and we’ll explain more about this below. However, for any water heater installation, whether it be a tank water heater or tankless, call the people you can trust for comprehensive water heater services: Butter Plumbing.

Heating On-Demand

Tankless water heaters use a heat exchanger to very quickly heat the cold water for your home. When you open a hot water tap anywhere in your home, a cold water inlet valve opens up and passes water through the heat exchanger. Heat transfers to the water from heated coils, and once the water reaches the pre-set temperature (usually between 90-120 degrees), the water flows into the open tap.

Two Types of Fuels

Tankless water heaters can operate using natural gas (propane) or electricity. It is easier to install electric tankless systems, but you may see somewhat less energy costs using gas. Gas tankless systems are about a third bigger than electric ones, but overall each tankless system is still much smaller than a storage tank system.

Benefits of Using a Tankless Water Heater

There are a number of benefits to installing and using a tankless water heater for your home or business:

  • Endless hot water – because tankless water heaters provide hot water on demand, you don’t have to worry about running out of hot water.
  • Increases energy efficiency – tankless water heaters can help increase energy efficiency in two ways: first, there’s no standby heat loss because there’s no tank and second, the on-demand process means you are only using electricity or gas when heating water.
  • Long lifespan – the average hot water tank has a lifespan of 8-12 years while a tankless system has a lifespan of 20 years.
